Amsterdam 22 June 2022: Catalyst 2030, the global movement of people and organisations that are powering systems change to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, announced the winners of the Catalyst 2030 Awards for Systemic Change 2022 at Althorp House in Northamptonshire, UK today.

The online, global awards ceremony, hosted by renowned BBC journalist Emily Kasriel and author, entrepreneur and Chief Growth Officer at Clearco, Ruma Bose, celebrated organisations that are driving co-creative collaborations that are confronting some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as poverty, illiteracy, health crises and access to education.

“This year’s finalists, selected after a rigorous due diligence process, are actively advancing the systems change that we need if we are to achieve the SDGs by the 2030 deadline,” said Sohini Bhattacharya, Catalyst 2030 spokesperson and CEO of Breakthrough. Bhattacharya co-chaired the awards committee with Social Imperative, Co-founder and Board Member, Matthew Bishop. “Nominated by our members, the finalists included systems change leaders who have continuously distinguished themselves within philanthropic, government, business, bilateral and multilateral endeavours.”

Sixty finalists were selected from more than 200 nominations. The overall criteria for the Awards were developed from the collective expertise of Catalyst 2030 members, building on the movement’s solid frameworks for catalytic systems change work.

“The awards finalists are all involved in important and impactful systems change work, presenting our independent jury with the difficult task of selecting just a handful of winners in each of the four award categories, ranging from corporates, governments and donors, to bilateral and multilateral organisations across the globe, from Africa and the Americas to MENA, Europe and Asia Pacific,” Bhattacharya said.

Certificates and trophies, designed by artisans from The India Arts Project and Creative Dignity, were presented to 15 Catalyst 2030 Awards winners as follows:

Our annual Catalyst 2030 Awards for Systemic Change takes place to celebrate the achievements of the individuals and organisations, who are driving co-creative collaborations to confront some of the world’s most pressing problems. In the spirit of global collaboration, anyone who has an interest in philanthropic funding and systems change work will want to join us for our one-hour awards ceremony which will take place online on Wednesday 22 June from 4pm to 5pm (CEST). Register to attend the awards ceremony here.

This year’s finalists have been involved in supporting work which aims to change the lives of people across the world for the better, ranging from seeking solutions to challenges such as poverty and food insecurity to inequal access to education, skills training and healthcare, to accelerate attainment of the SDGs.

A total of 200 nominations for the awards were received, from which the movement’s General Assembly, seven jurors and a 12-member awards committee selected more than 60 finalists. Awards finalists include our partners and allies such as philanthropic, multilateral and non-profit organisations, funders, governments and corporates, who embrace collaboration and co-creation as they shift power dynamics globally for greater inclusivity to pursue the SDGs. Social Imperative, Founder and Board Member, Matthew Bishop and Breakthrough, CEO Sohini Bhattacharya co-chaired the Awards Committee.

“We are excited that our growing movement of dedicated social entrepreneurs and innovators will be hosting our second annual awards ceremony to highlight and celebrate the outstanding work of various individuals, organisations and governments, who share and work towards our common goals to accelerate attainment of the SDGs. We invite everyone who has a keen interest in systems change work to join us as we globally celebrate their successes. These achievements of our members and allies demonstrate how our movement is impacting the world to make it far more just for everyone,” spokesperson for Catalyst 2030 Sohini Bhattacharya said.

The remarkable 2022 finalists included leaders from various sectors who continuously distinguished themselves within philanthropic, government, business, bilateral and multilateral endeavours.

“As we work to achieve the SDGs, we face a huge challenge. I am hopeful because we are social entrepreneurs! It is in our DNA to find the positive and innovate,” said Jeroo Billimoria, spokesperson and co-founder of the movement. “The philanthropists, donors, corporate and government leaders we honour today share our vision and the principles detailed in the Embracing Complexity Report. We are better together, and, with their true partnership and co-creation, I am confident we will achieve this monumental task.”

The ceremony, held at Althorp House in Northamptonshire and hosted by renowned BBC journalist Emily Kasriel, was broadcast live to a large global audience.

The Awards were given in six categories, with the finalists chosen from more than 200 nominations. There was rigorous judging process by a high level jury chaired by Matthew Bishop, Founder and Board Member of the Social Progress Imperative. The criteria largely mirrored the principles that the entire sector must embrace to achieve social impact. These include: A systems mindset; funding systems leaders rather than projects, working in true partnership, long-term engagement and collaborating with other stakeholders.

Special Recognition

Ashoka, Echoing Green, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship and Skoll Foundation being there from the start and providing invaluable support. And the early supporters – Chandler Foundation, GHR Foundation, Mastercard Foundation and Shockwave Foundation.

The Awards will help to kick off Catalysing Change Week 2021. All of the Award finalists will be invited to host sessions in the second annual Catalysing Change Week which will be held virtually from 3 to 7 May 2021.

“A core principle of our Theory of Change is to bring key stakeholders together to create tangible outcomes for policy-making,” Bishop said. “At Catalysing Change Week 2021, we will unite experts, social innovators, and representatives from the private sector and governments to showcase, listen to and come to understand one another. Through raising awareness of outstanding practices in the field and the potential to bring about change, we aim to change the mindset of policymakers, funders and leaders and urge them to give social innovators a seat at the decision-making table.”
